Introduction
Oboma is an accountant by profession, and a passionate advocate for the deaf & hard of hearing at heart. She is also a copywriter helping business owners communicate their values. She finds joy in music that soothes her soul and reminds her of God’s presence. She’s evolving, discovering new layers of herself each day, and embracing growth. Known for her contagious laughter, she admits she might just have earned the “clown-leaner” title for always trying to make others laugh, too. She calls herself God’s baby girl and truly lives like a gift to the world.
At what point did you champion the disability cause?
I started this cause after I realized that there had been so many misconceptions about the hard-of-hearing community. As a hard-of-hearing person, it can be tiring to encounter these misconceptions. However, for anyone who cares to listen, I educate them on the realities of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. Lately, there has been a better understanding; feedback from a few people confirmed this, but there is much more to come. Get ready!
How did you manage the challenge(s) you faced during your disability inclusion advocacy?
Since I started sharing my thoughts on disability inclusion on social media, there have been no challenges.
Are Organisations of Persons with Disabilities doing enough to shift the narrative from pity to empowerment? What more can be done?
Of course, the organisations I know and have seen so far are doing absolutely well. I am so grateful for the work they do in promoting disability inclusion in our society. I have learned so much from these remarkable disability organisations, and I am still learning.
If you could change one thing about disability perception globally, what would it be?
I want to be the living proof that persons with disabilities can achieve anything they desire. There is a myth that PWDs cannot achieve anything, but I laugh every time I hear this. This is because I am on a journey to challenge and change this narrative; something never seen or heard before!
